Electronics for Artists

$175.00

Beginning July 7, 2024 classes run every Sunday for 6 total weeks. Classes are from 1:00 to 3:00pm

Classes take place in person at The Luminary 2701 Cherokee, St Louis.

All classes are available through zoom with the same enrollment process. You will be prompted to specify upon checkout.

This course is designed to provide artists with a foundation in electronic art. By understanding the fundamental properties of electricity, we will provide core building blocks that artists can utilize in their own practice to develop multimedia art. Each week will include theoretical guidance and a strong aspect of practical demonstration using onsite tools such as, oscilloscopes, design software, modular synthesizers, CRTs and vector displays, waveform monitors, motors and microcontrollers.

Course Schedule

Week 1 — Fundamentals of Electricity

Defining and understanding the basics of voltage, current, and resistance and how these elements interact with artistic tools.

Week 2 — Analog Sound Synthesis

An introduction to audio synthesis through theory and demonstration of modular synthesis

Week 3 — Fundamentals of sound and Sound Synthesis

Theoretical framework behind the harmonic structure of sound and modulation techniques

Week 4 — Schematics and wiring diagrams

Learn the symbology required to draft electrical schematics and wiring diagrams

Week 5 — Analogue Video Synthesis

Introduction to video synthesis using raster, vector, and hybrid techniques – theory, practice, and demonstration.

Week 6 — Microcontrollers and motor control

Using motors and relays to fabricate kinetic art.
